Fussy Felines & Favourite Foods: Your Guide to Healthy Cat Treats

Mar 6, 2025

Dogs have many great qualities, (although I can’t think of any off the top of my head), but one thing they rarely are... is a picky eater. Take my housemate Rollo, fur example. He’s a nice enough chap, but he’s not the sharpest tool in the shed.

In the two years (which feels like way longer) he’s been living with us, he’s eaten (or tried to eat) sand, grass, dirt, socks, shoes, toilet paper and even his own poo. Ewwww!!!!

That’s why I laugh when I see dad letting him lick his face. Me, on the other hand, I’m what you might call discerning... or a fussy eater.

The reasons for this are hot-wired into our DNA and stretch all the way back to the days before we were domesticated. You see, in our wild state, we were programmed to kill and eat fresh meat, and to be extremely cautious about anything we hadn’t killed ourselves.

Unlike Bone Breath over there, we were never scavengers by nature, and would never eat old or contaminated food for fear of getting sick. Don’t get me wrong, if we were faced with starvation we could scavenge with the best of them - but our preference was always for the fresh kill.

Still is, really. We just know you humans don’t like it.

Another reason we get labelled ‘purrticular’ is because we like to eat our food at our leisure. Not bolt it down like it’s an Olympic speed trial. And then, of course, there’s the fact that we are creatures of habit. We tend to stick to certain things and turn our noses up at anything new or different.

Finally, we are also what you might call solitary eaters, prefurring to eat alone or in areas where there is no foot traffic, noise or stress.

GOOD FOR MY TASTE BUDS. GREAT FOR MY HEALTH:
But just because we are selective feeders, doesn’t mean we can’t be tempted with tasty morsels. Recently, my meowm has started bringing home these new Prime Cuts healthy cat treats from Kazoo.

They come in a range of flavours, including chicken breast, chicken liver, anchovy, sardines and beef lung. And I’ve gotta say, they make it damn hard to maintain my picky eater image. For one thing, they are so darned tasty. Just 100% meat or fish with no artificial additives, fillers or preservatives.

And not only that, but they’re good for me too.

Chicken is full of protein and natural vitamins and minerals that help me form muscle mass and keep my skin and fur healthy.

Sardines and anchovies are also a great source of protein and have high levels of Omega 3 which help promote skin and fur health and help with joint inflammation.

And beef has high levels of protein and gives me a strong heart, good vision and a healthy reproductive system. Talk about winner winner, chicken/fish/beef dinner!

DO CATS NEED TREATS?
Whoa! Easy there tiger! Does anyone need treats?
Does meowm need those Ferrero Rocher chocolates? Does catdad need that chilli-infused beef jerky?

No, they don’t need them, but they sure as heck like to have ‘em.  And it’s just the same for me. I like to be rewarded (or reward myself) with delicious things.

It’s the pawfect way to make me feel special, appreciated and loved. So, just make sure you keep those Prime Cuts coming.

TREATS WITH BENEFITS:
Having said that, cat treats can also be useful in quite a few situations.

Bonding:
It’s often said that the quickest way to a dog’s heart is through its stomach.
And whilst I may not be a complete guzzle guts like the dog, I am still pawtial to yummy tasting snacks and am quite prepared to be affectionate with my pawrents in order to get my claws on them.

You might call it supurrficial. But I call it smart.

Training:
Cat treats can also be used to, if not exactly train us, then at least get us to do your bidding.

Not in the lowbrow sit, stay, rollover style of dogs (although we can do those things if we choose) but as a way of reinforcing good behaviour such as using our kitty litter, staying off the furniture or remaining calm in the pet carrier.

Celebrating:
Treats are the purrfect way to celebrate special occasions such as my purrthday, holidays, or playing nicely with the dog, even though I sometimes want to bat his big nose out of my face.

Or as a way of rewarding me for things like, oh, I don’t know, not biting the vet when they use that thermometer... you know the one I'm talking about.

Variety:
Although we’re creatures of habit, we are open to a bit of variety every now and then.

And that’s why I was purrticularly happy when catdad came home with some Kazoo Kitty Craves and some Purrfect Purees.

Don’t get me wrong, I love my Prime Cuts, but it is always nice to try out new flavours and textures, like Kitty Craves' tasty Tuna Nibbles and scrummy Salmon Bites. Or the smooth tongue-lapping deliciousness of creamy chicken puree and salmon squeez-y goodness.

FINAL THOUGHTS:
Whilst we may be perceived as being fussy eaters much of the time, you will find that doesn’t really apply to Kazoo cat treats.

So, if you are looking for the purrfect way to reward your kitty for good behaviour, or you just want to show ‘em how much you love ‘em, then Kazoo Prime Cuts, Kitty Craves and Purrfect Puree are most definitely up to scratch!
